Two drive units on most cars
Most Model S and Model X cars are all-wheel drive, with a drive unit at the front and one at the rear. A noise or fault can come from either, so both are checked.

12V or 16V, depending on the year
Earlier cars have a 12V lead-acid battery; the updated Model S and Model X from 2021 have a 16V lithium-ion battery that must be configured after replacement.

In detail
Tesla’s larger cars
The Model S and Model X share most of their drivetrain and electronics. They are heavier than the Model 3 and Model Y, and most are all-wheel drive with two drive units, so suspension joints, bushes and both motors deserve attention as the cars age.
Many of these cars are now out of their original warranty, and owners use an independent workshop for work such as suspension parts, cooling, AC and low-voltage batteries. For warranty repairs and recalls, go to Tesla.

Is the noise from the front or the rear drive unit?
On all-wheel-drive cars it can be either, and suspension parts can sound similar. A short video with the sound, and when it happens, helps us plan the checks.
