Regenerative braking and your brakes
When you lift off the accelerator, an electric car’s motor slows it down and sends energy back to the battery. The friction brakes only step in for harder stops, so the pads last a long time. The downside is that discs and calipers are used lightly and can corrode, glaze or stick.
Brake disc skimming
Skimming machines a thin layer off each face of the disc on a lathe, removing rust ridges and uneven deposits that cause judder. It works when the disc has enough thickness left; otherwise the disc is replaced.
Keeping brakes healthy
Braking firmly now and then, from a safe speed, helps keep the discs clean. If you mostly use one-pedal driving, a yearly brake check is worthwhile; it is part of a scheduled service.

Questions owners ask
Why do EV brake discs rust?
Regenerative braking does most of the slowing, so the discs are used lightly and surface rust is not scrubbed off. In humid coastal air the rust can build up into rings that cause noise and judder.
Should the discs be skimmed or replaced?
If the disc stays above the minimum thickness marked on it after skimming, skimming on the lathe restores a smooth, even surface. If it is too thin or cracked, it has to be replaced.
Do electric cars need brake fluid changes?
Yes. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, whatever drives the car. Your owner's manual gives the interval.
