In detail
Software on the VW ID.4 and ID.6
The ID.4 and ID.6 rely on software for almost everything: the screen, driver assistance, charging and battery management. Updates fix bugs and can change how the car behaves. Many ID. cars in the UAE were imported, and depending on the market they were built for, they may not receive updates through local dealers. The VW ID. page has more on these cars.
Programming after repairs
Modern EVs check that their parts belong to the car. After a high-voltage part such as a PCS, contactors or a pyro fuse is replaced, the car often needs programming or configuration before it will charge or drive normally. We do this as part of the high-voltage repair.
Before an update
A software update needs a healthy low-voltage battery and a stable power supply. If the 12V battery is weak, we recommend replacing it first; see 12V and 16V battery.

Tesla sends its software updates over the air through the car's own connection. What we do on Teslas is the programming a car needs after we replace a part such as a PCS, contactors or a pyro fuse.
Why check the 12V battery before an update?
An update can take a long time with the car awake. A weak 12V battery can interrupt it, so the battery is checked before the update starts.
